size and location The civil parish comprises 1,900 acres/769 hectares. For centuries the most northerly stream of the river Kennet formed the northern boundary, but in recent years this boundary has been pushed a little further north, and now runs along the railway. The western boundary has also been subject to a recent change, and now runs along Old Lane. The river Enborne forms part of the southern boundary.

Adjoining parishes (clockwise from north) are Speen, Enborne, East Woodhay (Hants), West Woodhay and Kintbury.

All of Hamstead to the west of Ash Tree Corner lies within the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

2001 shows an increase on the 1991 census, which found 248 people in 88 households. The parish population has been slowly increasing from its lowest point of 219 in 1895, but has some way to go before reaching the all-time high of 1851, which was 345.

107 household were listed in the 2001 census but there are now 117. Most are owner-occupied, with about 20 association houses and about 14 flats and houses privately rented. Very few of the houses are second homes.

electoral information The 2006 electoral roll lists 162 voters in 80 households. However the residents of 36 households chose not to have their details published on the register, and thus 36 properties are not accounted for. The total number of households in the village in early 2006 is 117.
